Jonathan was expected to proceed from South Africa, where he attended the World Economic Forum on Africa, to Namibia.

Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, said on Twitter the President, who was initially expected back on Friday, was already on his way back to Nigeria following the insurgency.

“Due to security situation at home, President Jonathan cuts short his trip to South Africa. Visit to Namibia also aborted. On his way back home.

"The President is returning to Abuja immediately to personally oversee efforts by national security agencies to contain the fresh challenges to national security which have emerged this week in Borno, Plateau and Nassarawa States,"  said Abati.

Jonathan will meet the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and heads of national security services on arrival to review the security situation in the country.
