Anuoluwapo slit Akinyemi's throat at her family home in Magbon, Ogijo, Ogun state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Anuoluwapo allegedly murdered Akinyemi for her refusal to continue dating him.

An OND graduate of the Lagos State Polythenic Ikorodu, Akinyemi was said to be home alone last Wednesday, when Anuoluwapo came calling.

The police said Anuoluwapo used the knife to cut Akinyemi's throat with her while she bled.

A police source said, "It was later, someone gave an anonymous tip to the police that Akinyemi had broken up several times with Anuoluwapo.

In a bid to locate Anuoluwapo, police detectives were said to have picked residents who lived around Akinyemi's home for questioning.

He said, "The shirt which Anuoluwapo had worn to Akinyemi's house on the day of the murder was found hidden in a corner with blood stains on it.

How Young Girls Were Forced Into Baby Factory business in Imo State.

Posted by Metral

Nine girls, forced into pregnancy at a ‘baby factory’ in Imo State ,yesterday spoke of how they became victims.

The nine were arrested by the police yesterday after initially escaping during a raid of the ‘baby factory’.
Their arrest brings to 26 the number of victims rescued from Ahamefula Motherless Babies Home, Umuaka in Njaba Ciouncil Area of the state.
They are aged between 14 and 25.
The visibly exhausted girls told The Nation that they were held against their wish by the proprietor of the so-called motherless babies home simply known as Madam One Thousand.
The victims are all from Imo .
They said their parents were unaware of their whereabouts.
According to them, they were taken to the ‘baby factory’ by scouts engaged by Madam One Thousand.
The scouts include women who go about seeking vulnerable girls.
17-year old Adaobi Akubueze ,until her abduction a student in Lagos, said she referred to the centre by a medical doctor who conducted a pregnancy test on her.
She said:“The result of the test was positive and the doctor said I should not abort the pregnancy. He said he knew where I could go and have the child with adequate maternal care and where the baby would be taken care of until I would be ready to take charge.
“So I ran away from home without informing my parents. But on getting to the centre in Imo State, I was asked to produce my letter of introduction. After that, my phone was taken away from me and that was how I stayed there till the Police came and arrested us.”
She said of conditions in the centre: “We were kept in a crowded room with little ventilation and a doctor came once in a while to check us. Nobody was allowed to go beyond the first gate also known as the Green Gate. And one boy who we referred to as oga came around to sleep with the girls, especially those that were not yet pregnant.
“The compound was built in such a way that made escape impossible. It is fenced with high walls and no visitor was allowed to come into the area where the girls were kept, except Madam, Oyibo and the doctor.
“After nine months, those who were due to be delivered were taken to another location and Madam would only bring back news to us that our friend had given birth. But they never came back ”.
Another victim, Chinyere Onwuegbu, also 17, said she was living with her mother, a widow, until she ran away with one of her friends who convinced her that she could make a huge amount of money if she could be pregnant and sell the child after delivery.
Her words: “My friend brought me here and she told me to stay and get pregnant. Madam promised to take good care of me and that she would give me N60,000 if I had a baby boy and N30,000 if it was a girl.
“ But after I was impregnated, Madam began to force me to work hard despite my condition. I cried everyday but no way to escape”.
From outside, the ‘baby factory’ looks very much like a pure water production facility.
It sits on an expansive land and is walled round.
The main building has several rooms secured with iron doors.
A neighbour, who volunteered information on condition of anonymity, said: “All we saw were people coming to buy water but we began to express worry when we noticed flashy cars coming to the place at nights.”
Investigation also revealed that the owner of the ‘baby factory’ also runs a maternity home where the victims are taken to be delivered of their babies.
Oyibo, who was identified by the girls as the one who impregnated most of them, denied that he was paid to impregnate them.
He said: “I was employed to work in the pure water company, but I have slept with most of the girls but not to impregnate them as reported.”
Who is Madam One Thousand?
It was gathered that Madam One Thousand is no stranger to the police having been arrested by them at least twice before for a similar offence.
A source, who asked not to be named, said: “If the police are serious, they can arrest her; they know her identity. She has been in this trade for a long time. She even has medical doctors who work for her.
“Apart from that, since she also runs a registered maternity home, why can’t the police look in that direction and get her identity from the Ministry of Health that registered her clinic?”
Sources said she is at the head of a syndicate that also includes doctors.
The doctors refer victims to her and get paid accordingly.
Efforts to get the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Joy Elemoko, to comment on what becomes of the girls were unsuccessful as they did not pick calls to their handsets.
However, a reliable police source said the girls would be handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs after proper documentation for adequate medical attention as some of them are ill.

State Of Emergency May Be Declared In Borno, Yobe, Others

Posted by Metral

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
| credits: File copy

Indications emerged on Friday that the Federal Government might declare a state of emergency in five states in Northern Nigeria, as a last-ditch measure to check the rising killings and insecurity.

The states are Borno, Yobe, Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau.

A pointer to this emerged as President Goodluck Jonathan held an emergency meeting with security chiefs and some other top government officials in his bid to address the spate of insecurity in many parts of the country, with the latest being the killing of 47 policemen and 10 State Security Service operatives by the Ombatse militia in Alakyo forest in Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

They also destroyed nine patrol vans.

Jonathan, who rushed back to the country from South Africa late on Thursday, was said to have reviewed reports from the security chiefs on recent violence in Baga and Bama in Borno State; Alakyo Village in Nasarawa State; and Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

Among those at the meeting that lasted several hours were the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Said; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Alex Badeh; Director-General of State Security Service, Ita Ekpenyong; representative of the Chief of Army Staff, Maj-Gen. Emmanuel Bassey; and Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.

The IG wore a black arm band to the meeting as a sign of mourning for the slain policemen.

Others at the meeting were the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd.); Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe.

At a point, Olubolade, Anyim and Oghiadomhe stepped out of the venue wearing gloomy looks while Jonathan and the security chiefs continued with the discussions.

By the time the meeting finally ended, none of the government or security officials was willing to speak with journalists.

They also shielded Abubakar from journalists who sought an interview with him on the killing of the policemen.

He simply described the killing as “a sad development.”

A source at the meeting however described it as “a stormy session.”

The source said “far-reaching decisions,” some of which would be made public soon, and others which would be kept under wraps for security reasons were taken at the meeting.

Olubolade, who was moved to tears, managed to answer reporters’ questions on the murder of policemen.

•State of emergency

Asked to confirm speculations that government was considering the imposition of a state of emergency in some states, he said, “That is not within my purview. They (security chiefs) have the right to call for whatever they want. At the end of the day, the President will take a decision.

“It was an emergency security meeting at the instance of Mr. President. He had to cut his journey short because of insecurity and loss of lives; he was supposed to have been in Namibia. So, he summoned the security agencies to have a quick meeting with us and as you can see, they are still there. The Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs are still with him.

“He is looking at how we can put an end to all these troubles we are having and I think that at the end of that deliberation, you will get to know the outcome.”

He advised policemen against revenge, saying such would not help the nation.

“The security agencies particularly the police will not want to go and revenge. It is not going to help us because they are supposed to protect lives and property. Going to revenge will not douse tension. It will bring about a lack of confidence in the system. So, we will strictly discourage that,” he said.

On the allegation that policemen killed nine of the Ombatse cult members in Nasarawa State first before they retaliated, the minister said, “I wouldn’t know what is true about that. All I know is that the police have a duty to perform and as such, they must not be afraid, they must be equipped, they must be trained, they must do their job because they are under instructions. The police will not just wake up and pick their leaders if nothing has gone wrong.

“The populace must know that anybody can be brought in by the police for interrogation depending on the intelligence the police get; and that is what happens elsewhere.”

Meanwhile, security sources said on Friday that government was considering the military option to dislodge members of the Ombatse cult from their hideout in Alakyo forest in Nasarawa State.

This follows the inability of the police and SSS to accomplish the task.

•Death toll now 47

Saturday PUNCH learnt that 28 riot policemen who survived the attack were released by the militia and returned to their base in Akwanga.

Some of them returned to base without their rifles which they lost to their attackers.

The Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa State Police Command, Michael Ada, confirmed the return of the policemen to one of our correspondents on Friday.

He said that 17 others were still missing, adding that they had been presumed dead since they were yet to be seen two days after.

“The 17 missing policemen are presumed dead because they have been missing for over 48 hours. So this brings the number of the dead to 47. But the search and rescue teams are still searching for the missing officers and they have yet to report back to the headquarters,” Ada explained.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abayomi Akeremale, also confirmed the return of the 28 policemen.

Akeremale told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lafia that some of the policemen held hostage by the group during the attack were released on Friday morning.

He said 17 corpses of the slain officers were yet to be recovered. He explained that a total of 93 policemen were deployed for the operation, out of which 43 were suspected to have been killed.

Akeremale said that a suspected member of the militia had been arrested and was in police custody, adding that investigations on the incident were going on.

Akeremale also said he would visit the Squadron 38 Mopol Base in Akwanga to appeal to spouses and children of the slain policemen, who blocked the Akwanga-Lafia highway on Friday in protest over the killings.

•Protesters block expressway

Meanwhile, no fewer than 200 people travelling through Nasarawa State were on Friday trapped in a village near Akwanga, in an attempt to avoid a roadblock by protesting women and children.

NAN reports that the women and children were protesting over the killing of policemen and other security agents at Alakyo village by the Ombatse militia on Tuesday.

Following the blockade, vehicles tried to go through bush paths but the protesters blocked the paths, saying they were enforcing a restriction of movement through the state.

Some of the travellers told NAN that they were trapped in a remote village off Akwanga, near a local government area primary school and had no protection.

They said the women, who blocked the road, carried big sticks and were already burning car tyres on the bush paths to demonstrate their anger and dismay over the killings.

Commercial transporters and private vehicle drivers were trapped in the blockade.

One of the passengers, Mrs. Victoria Dzeremo, trapped with her daughter, Erdoo, said their vehicle, a commercial bus, had been stopped from further movement few kilometres off Akwanga.

“We have been here in this bush for more than an hour; these women have blocked the road and are demanding for government’s explanation over their husbands’ killings.

“They are here with their children, we have been begging them since to allow us passage but to no avail, the situation is quite serious.

“Now, they have started burning the nearby bush and we are afraid the fire might escalate and affect the vehicles,” Dzeremo said.

The Police Public Relations Officer in-charge of Nassarawa State, DSP Michael Ada, said Akeremale had directed the Area Commander to go and persuade the protesters to open the road.

NAN learnt the protesters insisted that they would only leave the road when their delegation to Governor Tanko Al-Makura returns and gives them a feedback on government’s position.

Dokubo-Asari threatens oil production

Posted by Metral

Abuja-  Leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Mujahid Dokubo-Asari has threatened a complete halt to oil production if the Nigerian government dare arrest him for his provocative utterances to cause unrest.

Dokubo-Asari moved a motion in the Nigeria House of Representatives where he called upon the legislators and electorate give President Goodluck Jonathan a second if ever the country would want to continue experiencing peace, stability and harmony  ahead of the 2015 presidential polls.

Nigeria is sharply divided between Christians and Muslims, but the southerners, who have been sidelined for years want Jonathan to be given yet another term of rule.

For his utterances, Dokubo-Asari threatened violence and insurgency if the government dares arrest adding that the move would have far-reaching implications on oil production and peace in Nigeria.

During a fiery press conference in Abuja, he was in defiant mood and openly attacked the government.

The conference followed reports Dokubo-Asari faced arrest on charges yet to be clarified.

“The last time former president Olusegun Obasanjo arrested me, my arrest reduced Nigeria’s oil production to 700 000 barrels per day from an estimated three million (3 000 000).

"This time, it will reduce it to zero barrels, and we will match violence by violence;  intrigues by intrigues, we are ready for them,” he said.

The NDPVF leader also vowed that Nigeria would become “history” if he is arrested.

He wondered why those clamouring for his incarceration did not do so when some northern leaders threatened to make the country ungovernable.

“I stand by my statement which I made in my earlier press conference.

There will be no peace, not only in the Niger Delta, but everywhere, if Goodluck Jonathan is not President by 2015," Dokubo Asari added.

Blackberry maybe ban in Nigeria.

Posted by Metral

Blackberry services could be at risk of being banned in the country as a new regulation by the NCC, will run counter to the technical operating standards of the phone’s distinct network.

Our source gathered yesterday that the telecoms regulator was working on a regulation, which would make it mandatory for any licensee in the nation’s telecoms market to provide access to its communications facilities for necessary interception by the law enforcement agencies.

To be called ‘Lawful interception of communications regulations”, the regulation, which is currently at the draft stage, is based on the need to provide a legal and regulatory framework for the lawful interception of communications in Nigeria and the collection and disclosure of intercepted communication.

It will also specify the nature and types of communications to be intercepted; prescribe penalties for noncompliance with the regulations; provide a notification to the commission of all warrants issued, amended, renewed or cancelled under the regulations as well as ensure the privacy of subscribers as contained in the Nigerian constitution. It was gathered that Section 13 of the regulation Protected or Encrypted Communications will run counter to the technical operations of Blackberry.

By their designs and unlike other mobile devices, Blackberry messages are encrypted and where criminal investigation is required, the law enforcement agents will face denial of access to Blackberry network.

Specifically, Section 13 of the regulation empowers the National Security Adviser, NSA, and the State Security Service, SSS, to request the disclosure of protected or encrypted communications.

According to the regulation: “Where the communications intercepted is an encrypted or protected communication, the licensee shall provide the National Security Adviser and the State Security Service with the key, code or access to the protected or encrypted communication.

“Where the key or code is in the possession of another person, the licensee shall be under an obligation to request such other person to disclose the key or code to the National Security Adviser and the State Security Service for the purpose of complying with a warrant.” The regulation, under Section 20, also specifies the penalties for contravention.

“If a licensee or any of its officers, manager, chief executive officer, secretary or other similar officers of the licensee required under this regulation fails to comply with the provision of this regulations, such licensee or its officers shall be liable to a fine of N5m. If such an offence is continuing, such a licensee or officer shall be liable to a daily default penalty of N500,000.” The regulation clearly states that the commission may revoke the licence of the licensee for failure to comply with the regulation.

“The commission shall give a prior written notice to the licensee of such revocation, not less than 30 days to the withdrawal of the licensee.” Also, the commission may institute an action for non-compliance through injunction or specific performance or any or such other judicial means of enforcing a duty or obligation imposed on a licensee pursuant to the regulations.

However, Blackberry messenger, email and web services are sent over an encrypted network and the company maintains a strict policy of non-disclosure of pass codes or keys to government officials.

Last year, officials of Blackberry said the Blackberry users in Nigeria were about three million and these individuals face an uncertain future in case of possible revocation of Blackberry licence by the regulator, given its stern position not to release the key to its encrypted network to any government officials.

Blackberry has continued to face widespread concern over its strong data encryption, which is beloved by corporate customers eager to guard secrets, but troublesome for some governments in the Middle East and Asia that it could be used by militants to avoid detection.

It will be recalled that between 2010 and 2011, Indian government threatened to ban Blackberry over the phone manufacturer’s failure to provide access to customers’ corporate e-mails to the government.

The Indian government request for access to the Blackberry network was part of a broader effort by the country’s intelligence to monitor security threats made via mobile phones and the internet. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had also in 2010 threatened to cut off Blackberry services due to its encryption policy.

Newsday also gathered that the NCC’s current move was in line with strategic measures of the Federal Government to ensure maximum national security by providing a legal framework that empowers the law enforcements agencies to access any licensed communication network in the country.

Police in Borno State, shoots a doctor, beats up hospital staffs.

Posted by Metral

"The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, was shut-down early today, Thursday, when policemen, who brought corpses of their colleagues that were killed in Bama carnage to the hospital’s morgue went on rampage, shooting a medical Doctor, beating to coma some medical staff, and destroying a number medical laboratories in the hospital.
A staff of the hospital who did not want his name in print said the police who brought the corpses from Bama yesterday for deposit were told that the morgue was full of other corpses, but insisted that their own corpses must also be admitted.
He said "You know when there is no place to keep corpses sometimes they are kept on the floor pending when a space is created for refrigerating, but when they came this morning, the mobile policemen went on rampage and started shooting. They beat up a professor and other medical staff and also shot a medical doctor before some Military men in the hospital came to bring the situation under control.”
According to him, the hospital has been shutdown for now, as some doctors have threatened, not to attend to policemen who are being brought for treatment almost on a daily basis.
“The doctors are saying that, they deserve some respect from the uniform men because some of the security operatives, particularly the police have this disrespecting attitude towards them. Some of these doctors and professors they beat up would have been IGPs if they were policemen, but somebody who is far down the ladder would be treating them as nobody.” he explained.
Also a top security official, who did not want his name published said a professor at the UMTH called and told him what happened at the hospital, stressing that, the incident was unfortunate.
Attempt to confirm the incident failed as efforts to speak with the Police Commissioner, Yuguda Abdullahi who was at the Maiduguri Government House about one hour after the incident refused to talk to our correspondent. He quickly entered his car and shut the door, even as his orderly told reporters that he would not want to speak to the Press."

2015: Race for APC ticket heats up

Posted by Metral

"As the merging parties in the All Progressives Congress, APC, conclude their conventions, CHIDI OBINECHE, writes on the race for the presidential ticket of the party.
On May 11, the congress for Progressive Change, CPC, one of the merging parties in the evolving APC will hold it’s convention to among other things ratify the merger. The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN had already done theirs a forthright ago. The All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP will hold their convention this month. Only the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, where the Imo State governor elected on its platform unilaterally took a rump of the party in the state to the APC, is left in the cold.
As the curtain draws on the conventions, the focus will move to the election of a standard bearer for the party in the 2015 elections. Already, grand alliances, and jostlings for the ticket are intensifying.
On the card are former military head of state and thrice presidential candidate of the ANPP and CPC, in the 2003, 2007, and 2011 presidential elections, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd). Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Malam Nasir El-rufai, former Kano State governor Mallam Shehu Ibrahim Shekerau and speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, whose rumoured romance with the APC is gaining ground each passing day.
From the past
In the first, second and third republics, the parties in Nigeria operated along broad geo-ethnic Iines. In the first Republic, the Northern Peoples Congress, NPC, was rooted mainly in the North, though it controlled the levers of power at the centre. The Action Group, AG was domiciled in the west, while the National Council of Nigerian Citizens, NCNC, called the slots in the East. The same pattern occurred in the second republic, where the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN had exclusive rulership of the west, the Nigeria Peoples Party, NPP, in the East and the ruling National Party of Nigeria, NPN, in charge of most of the states in the North. However, unlike in the First republic, the NPN had a more National appeal with strongholds in a seeming pan-Nigeria outlook.
The third republic took the shape of a system rooted more in ideology, after the then Military ruler Gen Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd) foisted a two party structure that dismantled geo-ethnic hegemony.
The current democratic dispensation has witnessed a near exclusive dominance of the political space by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Initially, the three regional outlook of North, West, East, appeared on the horizon, but soon fizzled out. While the Alliance for Democracy, AD which later metamorphosed into the ACN held court in the South West, the APP, (later ANPP) controlled 9 states in the North. Only the PDP has since inception maintained a National spread that has turned it into a behemoth.
The task of dismantling the PDP from the centre and across the various states, it rules has become a compelling challenge that has created the impetus for a merger. Previous, alliances in the past in pursuit of this dream failed to click.
Enter the APC
The APC, according to its leading founder and leader of the ACN, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu “is a child of circumstance.” It’s ultimate mission is to drive the process that will send the PDP packing. With the popularity of the CPC, and the ANPP in the North, and the near cult-like control of the South-West of the ACN in the South-west, the calculation is to achieve through these two broad divides, more than 60% of the electoral votes at first count in 2015, leaving only the South East and South South to the PDP. In a solidarity show over the emergence of the party, many disenchanted PDP leaders are said to be having a sizzling romance with the party; a situation that has kept the leadership hierarchy of the party on its toes.
Only recently, Babangida, a former PDP presidential aspirant upped the ante by sensationally nominating Tambuwal to go for presidential ticket in a situation where the second term ambition of president Goodluck Jonathan has not been foreclosed. A huge chunk of the governors, elected on PDP platform including eclectic chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and Niger State Governor, Aliyu Babangida have barely concealed their involvement in the APC. The party, therefore, from this outlook is already taking the shape and form of PDP in size, content and vision.
APC ticket
As the party grows in all spheres, a disturbing contention is in who will fly the presidential flag. This is situated behind the ambitions and leadership style of Buhari and Tinubu. While Tinubu is reputed for dictatorial tendencies and imposition of candidates, Buhari is not known to brook any dissent or opposing view. So between them, the die is cast. Who will blink first. The APC has yet to lay down groundnorms that will show the light, and drive the engine of the nomination process beyond veiled comments of co-operation from the leaders.
Buhari’s first salvo is a ready willingness to step down for a superior candidate.
“Whoever thinks he has got a chance, let him come out because the more we are, the merrier it becomes.” He explains his ambition more. “I will be ready to step down if there is a formidable and better candidate. It is not about me, but for the survival of the party. APC is about ensuring internal democracy. Whoever emerges is the person I will support. Yes I will be ready to step down.”
Also former presidential candidate of the ANPP and a leader of APC Mallam Ibrahim Shehu Shekerau, argues that “it is too early to talk about a presidential candidate. In APC we will have internal democracy that will guide the party. Let us have the party on ground first, Congresses will be held at various levels that will produce our candidates. At that point, anybody can contest, and the party will support the best candidate that emerged.”
He gives vent of the party’s mission: “We are not just talking of dismantling the PDP. We want change we are not just talking about change in democracy, but change in attitude, change in approach, change in character, change in conducting the business of government. That’s why our slogan is change. We’re determined to change Nigeria for better.”
Based on the situation on ground, the ticket is bound to go the North, who have been behaving like fish out of water since 1999. With this permutation, the vice presidential slot or senate presidential seat may go to the South west, whose self-claimed marginalization was brought about by the nature of the emergence of Tambuwal as speaker in 2011.
Senator Smart Adeyemi, however sees beyond the change smokescreen of the APC. He sees the party as a paper tiger, whose bogey value will come crashing on the altar of vaulting ambition and ego. “quote me, the party won’t go far. Want until it’s time to pick the ticket: if it survives, then they have tied.”
Adeyemi, who is the chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) committee in the senate, opined that merger processes in Nigeria are volatile and this will not be an exception to the rule.
The governorship candidate of APGA in Abia State in 2011 Oduagha Reagan Ufomba admits this much when he said that the focus on change is so enchanting that it tends to subsume other critical issues; which will definitely rear up.” How far will APC go? The ensuing months ahead will chart the path to deepen its existence, or it will crash out like its forebears."

Jim Iyke Has Spoken: I have 125 pairs of sunglasses & about 200 pairs of shoes

Posted by Metral

Jim Iyke oh, only you 200 pairs of shoes, so if you were a lady, you"d have had like over 600 pairs, lol!
In a recent interview with Punch, Jim Iyke when asked about his love for sunglasses had this to say:

"I have about 125 pairs. My personalassistants and people who come to my house keep stealing them.  Also, I have been a collector of all kinds of stuff-shoes and sneakers. I think I own about 200 pairs; it is not something to brag about, this is a form of art for me, just like the way people collect stamps.  I like shoes and I collect them. I keep the ones my mother owned in the 60s and the ones my aunts owned in the 70s. I get shoes that are much branded and are limited edition. For me it is not just about fashion statement anymore, it is art."
Don't try Jim!
When asked how he spends his days, he said "I sleep around 3am every day, no matter the time zone or the country. I wake up fairly early, depending  on the amount of activities I am involved in  but I think I have some sort of in-built clock, I wake up at the same time every day which is  6 am. When I wake up, I pray because God is the central part of my life and I give it all to Him.  My father always said the best exercise of the day is prayers. As soon as I am done with prayers, I do an exercise which is a fusion of yoga and martial arts. It is a process where the body, soul and mind have to be in sync.  I do it to purge my mind and body, relieve the pressures of the day and make decisions about   the kind of people I would let into my life for that day. I have not been to the hospital in over 12 years of doing the exercise."

Nigeria’s trade with Canada hits $3bn

Posted by Metral

Nigeria’s bilateral trade relationship with Canada in 2011 hit $3 billion thus making the country largest economic partner in sub-saharan Africa. Speaking in Toronto at the Canada-Nigeria Investment Conference (CNIC) 2013 with the theme: ‘Canada-Nigeria Synergy Vision 20:2020’, Managing Director of Nigerian Export Import Bank (NEXIM), Mr Robert Orya said that Nigeria presents new opportunities for Canadian businesses to invest in a wide range of key sectors such as telecommunication, transportation, infrastructure, manufacturing, aeronautics, engineering, oil and Gas, Education, ICT, Health, Agriculture, Solid Minerals, Security and Tourism.
The NEXIM chief also took the opportunity to further explore joint collaboration opportunities which his bank     initiated last January with a sister Export Credit Agency, the Export Development Canada (EDC), when the Canadian Minister of International Trade and Minister for Asia-Pacific Gateway, Honourable Ed Fast led an equally powerful team to Nigeria on an investment exploration mission.
Orya explained the mandate and operations of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank to the EDC team, saying that the Bank was established by Act 38 of 1991 as Nigeria’s sole Export Credit Agency with the broad mandate to promote the diversification of the Nigerian economy and deepening the external sector, particularly the non-oil, through the provision of credit facilities in both local and foreign currencies; risk-bearing facilities through export credit guarantee and export credit insurance; business development and financial advisory services, among other initiatives.
According to him, the bank’s current strategic initiatives are targeted towards boosting employment creation and foreign exchange earnings in the MASS sectors of the Nigerian economy which are Manufacturing, Agro-processing, Solid Minerals and Services (Tourism, Transportation and Entertainment) industries adding that the bank is owned in equal proportions by two shareholders namely, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, and does not derive its subventions directly from the Federation Account, but must operate profitably to pay back dividends to its two shareholders.
NEXIM, Orya said,  is a development finance institution with a commercial orientation and has been buoyantly self-sustaining. “Typically, the bank in fulfillment of its role strategically forays into the key sectors under its mandate that are seemingly unattractive to the commercial banks, ‘derisks’ them, and as soon as they become less risky, moves on to other areas” he said.
He confirmed that  the bank has put in place very dynamic enterprise-wide risk management, and corporate governance frameworks that make it easy to ensure that financing is only provided to companies that promise good return on investments since the funds must necessarily be revolved, as it were.
“ Moreover, in line with the Basle II agreements, NEXIM is taking the lead towards complying with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as required by the apex Bank and financial regulator in Nigeria” he added.
Responding,  Regional Manager of EDC responsible for Africa, Europe and Middle East (AEME),, Mrs. Diane Belliveau, noted that the modus operandi of NEXIM Bank is quite similar to that of the EDC.
According to her, the EDC was established as a Crown corporation – an ECA, wholly owned by the Government of Canada with mandate to support and develop Canada’s export trade by helping Canadian companies respond to international business opportunities.
But she noted that  like NEXIM, EDC does not rely on governmental annual appropriations, but is financially self-sufficient and operates much like a commercial institution. “It collects interest on its credit facilities as well as premiums on its insurance products, and also has a treasury department that sells bonds and raises money in global capital markets. It offers insurance and financial services, bonding products and small business solutions to Canadian exporters and investors and their international buyers. It also supports Canadian direct investment abroad and investment into Canada with much of its transactions done in partnership with other financial institutions and through collaboration with the government of Canada” she explained.
In a statement, the  Regional Manager,  stated that since the EDC opened shop in 1944, it has facilitated more than $1,041 billion in exports and foreign investment by Canadian companies.
In 2012 alone, she noted,  the agency helped more than 7,400 Canadian companies to do business in 87 countries, with a majority of the companies being small business, and more than 30 per cent of their operations being in fast-growing emerging markets.
Applying its financial products and services strategically, she further explained, the EDC customers’ export sales and investments totalled an impressive $87.4 billion which helped generate an estimated $52.7 billion of Canada’s GDP, and helped sustain 573,773 jobs.

Yorubas rejects Buhari's offer to step down

Posted by Metral

A few days after former Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, offered to drop his ambition of vying for the presidency if a better candidate emerges, a socio-political group, Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum, has expressed regret for his position. In a statement by its Secretary General, Akin Malaolu, the group said that if Buhari steps down for another candidate, the alliance that brought about the All Progressives Congress (APC) would fail.

According to the group, at the critical time in the country's history only Buhari would rescue the people from suffering. The statement reads: "We somewhat regret that the former head of state and 2011 presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, would offer to drop his ambition in 2015.

We want to warn that the masses of our people do not subscribe to that idea because of the prevailing situations of Nigeria today. "It should be crystal clear to all leaders of the opposition that only Buhari is acceptable to the Nigerian people because he is a genuine leader and if, by error, he is forced to step down or stabbed at the back, the masses of our great country would back out of the merger and this may signal the continuation of PDP in power.
It is not in doubt that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), together with its reckless political regime, have not benefited the people and this has been clearly confirmed by school children, housewives, artisans and our unemployed youths and just a few days ago, we witnessed the mass killings of hapless and helpless Nigerians in Baga province of Borno State and till now the government of Jonathan appears at ease with the development.
"Hunger, ignorance and disease have been our woes. We, therefore, beseech leaders of the opposition to rally round Major-General Buhari to emerge as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2015."

Ayila(Super Eagles Player) may be jailed in Ukraine

Posted by Metral

"Super Eagles' former defensive midfielder, Yusuf Ayila, may be jailed in Ukraine for his refusal to obey court summons in Ukraine. According to a story published in a Ukraine newspaper, made available to futaa.com, the Dynamo's former Kiev midfielder defied a court summon to a hearing on allegations that he abandoned his wife and children in the former Soviet country.

Ayila, who is now on loan at Turkish side, Orduspor, was accused of dumping his wife Aishat Gbemisola and daughters Aliyat and Sefinat Yussuf in Kiev since October 2011. And despite being served two summons, the Super Eagle ace did not appear before a Ukrainian court on both occasions in Kiev.

Ayila, who is said to have since married another woman, Ololade Aderogba, in his native Nigeria, has allegedly stopped paying rent, their children upkeep or contacting his first wife. The former wife, Gbemisola, and the midfielder are said to have been together since August 1998."

This is quiet bizarre. Adult Workers in Brazil to learn English to attract Nigerian customers

Posted by Metral

"Nigerian football fans at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil will likely not have difficulty negotiating  during the tournament as the host county’s  have started English lessons in order to serve clients better.
The Super Eagles feature in the competition as African champions, playing in Group B alongside Spain, Uruguay and Tahiti.
According to AFP, Belo Horizonte, venue of Nigeria’s first match against Tahiti, has 80,000 adult workers who are counting on brisk business as authorities predict 40,000 tourists will be in town during the tournament.
An estimated 140,000 tourists are expected to follow for the 2014 World Cup.
“We teach basic expressions but also have demonstrations with erotic paraphernalia so they can learn the names, how to use them and propose them,” said Igor Fuchs, a volunteer who also teaches Spanish and French.
“Tourists are going to flock here and those who come from abroad like to spend,” said 26-year-old Vitoria, as she waited for work at one of many  motels on busy Guaicurus Street.
On average, she sees 20 customers a day in her tiny room, with 15-minute sessions costing between $10 and $25.
But not all are sold on the need to speak English – or any other foreign language for that matter.
“I know basic words such as ‘good morning’  said 31-year-old Juliana across the street.
“For the rest, I get by with gestures. All men are the same. They come for the same thing. No need for words.”
